讲座题目：城市从何而来——中国城市化的论辩（Where Does the City Begin? Contending Views of Chinese Urbanization. ）

讲座内容：
        陈述关于中国城市化的含义及城市在中国现代史的变化角色的不同观点。当许多国际观察把中国从生产性城市到消费性城市的转变解释为国家规划能力受到侵蚀时，中国的城市化实际上是经济发展不可避免的结果，需要转变公共管理方式和理性管治。城市化与其说是市场化和自由化的象征，不如说是国家再生产以及在更大范围内进行土地控制和行政区划调整的产物。
        This lecture will present different views of China’s urbanization, the contestation about what it means, and the changing roles that the city has played in China’s recent history. The idea of a socialist “city of producers” as opposed to the capitalist “city of consumers” has been central for many years, while China implemented a program of socialist accumulation that required cities to remain small and industrial. Reforms and marketization have changed this situation and cities have become the engine of China’s consumption revolution. While many international observers interpret this transition as an erosion of the state planning capacity, urbanization is still seen in China mostly as the inevitable consequence of economic development, which requires an administrative transition and rational management to prevent conflicts. Rather than being simply a sign of marketization and liberalization, however, urbanization tends to reproduce the state and to place larger parts of China’s territory and land under public control.

        Luigi Tomba ：researches Chinese Politics at the Australian Centre on China in the World, Australian National University. Australia. His most recent book is “The neighbourhood consensus: Practices of Power in Urban China,” Cornell University Press, 2014. He is also the editor of The China Journal, the most important academic journal on Contemporary China, published by University of Chicago Press
        Luigi Tomba澳洲国立大学中国与世界研究中心研究员。长期从事中国政治研究。并在美国芝加哥大学出版的当代中国研究最重要刊物之一The China Journal担任编辑。《最新著作是“邻里共识：中国城市的权力实践”（康奈尔大学出版社2014年版）》。
